Blown IVs and necrotic tissue

Our precious little man hasn’t had an easy start.

Little babies have a difficult time with IVs in their tiny veins. Sean’s veins were especially difficult as every nurse mentioned how the veins rolled and were difficult to get into.

We learned every day how the best IV nurses worked on the task of getting a good connection and each nurse is only given two tries. Poor Sean had every IV location imaginable as each hand, wrist, ankle and foot would blow out eventually–it was almost impossible to see him with an IV going into his scalp after they had no other location left.

Sadly one night they didn’t catch a blown vein in the top of his right foot until too late. The IV fluids had damaged his foot in what they call an IV burn. Doctors, plastic surgeons and other specialists have been monitoring his foot as it can be very severe with damage throughout the epidermis and even down into the muscle, nerves, and bones. Worse case is he’d need a skin graft to repair his foot.
